Tom Macdonald's original I Wish challenge
This Is My Story. For the first time I am making a film that focuses on me and the events that lead up to me losing everything. For years I ignored the warning signs of my mental health, all the trauma and events that took place in my life that contributed to me having a breakdown and a life full of terrible choices. Men seem to carry the stigma of mental health and asking for help with them, and in Scotland, the number one killer of men over 40 is suicide. This all happened 2 days after my 40th birthday. |
Inspired by the lyrics of various tracks by Nova Rockafeller and Tom MacDonald.... The music that helped me through some of the darkest days of my life was created by these two independent artists, Nova and Tom. Thank You to you both. Dear Tom & Nova,
I know we have never met and TBH I am new to your fandom ranks. I need you both to understand the impact you have had on me and so many other people. I know you both have struggled with your own demons, but your words are heard and felt around the world. I know you must get thousands of messages so I am putting mine here in hope you will somehow see it.
It is strange how music connects us and someone we have never met singing about something that may not even be true, can make us feel less alone. The feeling of loneliness and worthlessness is like a virus that festers and damages us like rust. An endless pit of dispair, with no way out. Feeling this as I lay on a bed in a spare room at my mums house, I question if there was even a point any more - and why not take control, why not? - why not choose to just leave and end the empty.
These where dark days, and then a friend told me about Tom Macdonald. I thought - "I like an angry white boi rapper " and I was hooked. That led me to Nova, and your music pulled my mind from a pit of despair. It took months but songs like I Wish; Hey You; Don't Look Down; Did Your Best; No Good Bastards (Shout out to Brandon Hart, also follow him here) and Gang Gang make the soundtrack to salvation for me.
So from me to you both, Thank you. Never give up! Tom, embrace the fame ffs, and Nova you are literally the foundation that holds Thomas's world together - if you are both reading this look at Tom, he will confirm my theory.
Keep loving each other, and never ever take today, or each other for granted.
Rocco

Why I Am Sharing My Story.
I want to share my story for a few reasons, but the main one is that I am not special. Far from it - so there are going to be more men like me. Men who felt the way I did. Men who need to hear "you are not alone". It is simple really, trying to turn the worst moment of my life, into positive impact on the world.
Music, Art & Expression - Mr Quin
During this period in my life I needed a way to express my self how I felt and just keep my hands and mind busy some days. Before I really found nova & Tom's music I was editing little music remix to express my feelings - again sounds silly but it really help me keep my mind busy. I expressed pain, love, sadness, self hate, self pity and rage through this project. Anyone who knows DC lore will know the reality of the Joker & Harley Quinn, the tragedy of that was relatable during periods of self pity and reflection, fueled by a love lost and anger.
This was when Mr Quin emerged as I expressed this pain and self hate. After I had finished Mix Tape A I started Mix Tape B and that is the point I found Nova and Toms music and started to get the help I needed. I do plan on finishing Mix Tape B - I want them to show the chaos and pain and then the healing.

Advice & Suicide Prevention.
There are many factors that make men more vulnerable to suicide. Men are often under pressure to appear strong and not show signs of weakness. This means they are less likely to talk about any issues they are facing or seek help when they are struggling with their mental health. Sometimes pride comes into the equation and men may think they can handle their issues on their own or worry about being a burden to others. Men are also more likely to respond to stress with risky behavior such as abusing alcohol which increases the risk of suicide by up to eight times.
A relationship breakdown has a bigger impact on a man’s suicide risk, than a woman’s – divorced men are three times more likely to commit suicide than their married peers, whereas divorced women show no increased risk.
Warning signs to look out for in your friends, family or co-workers include:
